Joseph Urell, Chief Officer, H.M. Coastguard, Hope
Cove, Devon, England was awarded the R.N.L.I. (Royal Navy Lifeboat
Institution) Silver Medal for Gallantry on 2nd July 1874. The
Hamburg Brigantine "Theodor" out of Venezuela bound for Falmouth
with a cargo of cotton seed and dyewoods, was blown off course and
wrecked at Thurlestone, South Devon. Her master and 2 men were lost.
Mr Urell and his crew put off in the coastguard boat and saved the
mate and two men.
